Tal Medical is pursuing the development of an innovative neurostimulation modality termed Low Field Magnetic Stimulation (LFMS).   LFMS is a non-invasive technique that uses an external device to apply a pulsed magnetic field to the brain.

The electromagnetic field of LFMS is significantly different then the fields of currently marketed neuromodulation techniques such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). In LFMS, the field strength is below the threshold required for neuronal firing.  This is in contrast to both rTMS and ECT, where neurons are directly depolarized by the applied field.  In addition to applying a lower strength field, LFMS uses a different waveform (shape, frequency, etc.) compared to either rTMS or ECT. 

Importantly, the differences in the applied field between these techniques lead to different physiological effects.  This was highlighted by a sham-controlled neuroimaging study with LFMS that demonstrated an immediate decrease in brain glucose utilization, the opposite of the effect reported in published studies with rTMS and ECT.

The Tal Medical LFMS Device is available only for research purposes and has not been cleared by the FDA for commercial sale.
